Therefore, maintaining a normal blood sugar level can reduce the chances of developing many complications<\/p><p>which can cause disabilities or even be life-threatening.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Cardiovascular disease.<\/strong> Diabetes increases the risk of various cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease with chest pain (angina), heart attack, stroke, narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), and high blood pressure.<\/li><li><strong>Nerve damage (neuropathy).<\/strong> Excess sugar in the blood can damage the walls of the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) that nourish the nerves, especially in the legs. This can cause tingling, numbness, burning, or pain. This usually starts in the tips of the toes or fingers and gradually spreads upward. Poorly controlled blood sugar can lead to a complete loss of sensation in the affected limbs over time.<\/li><\/ul><p>Damage to the nerves affecting the gastrointestinal tract can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. It can also cause erectile dysfunction in men.<\/p><ul><li><strong>Kidney damage (nephropathy).<\/strong> The kidneys contain millions of tiny blood vessels that prevent waste products from entering the bloodstream. Diabetes can damage this system. Severe damage can result in kidney failure or end-stage renal disease, which requires mechanical filtration (dialysis) or a kidney transplant.<\/li><li><strong>Eye damage.<\/strong> Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensing part of the eye), a condition called diabetic retinopathy, which can eventually lead to blindness. Diabetes also increases the risk of other serious vision-related conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma.<\/li><li><strong>Foot damage.<\/strong> Nerve damage in the foot or poor blood flow to the foot increases the risk of certain foot complications. Wounds or blisters can turn into serious infections if left untreated. Treating these infections may require the removal (amputation) of a toe, foot, or leg.<\/li><li><strong>Skin and oral diseases.<\/strong> Diabetes can make you more susceptible to skin and oral infections, including bacterial and fungal infections. The risk of gum disease and dry mouth also increases.<\/li><li><strong>Complications during pregnancy.<\/strong> High blood sugar levels threaten the lives of both mother and fetus. The risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and birth defects increases if diabetes is not well-controlled.
